Common questions

Should I use a return above zero?

Zero is right for money kept in cash, which is where most short-term goals belong. A positive return assumes the balance is invested and will move up and down on the way, so it suits goals several years out rather than a holiday next summer.

When are the contributions counted?

At the end of each month, which is the standard ordinary-annuity assumption. Paying at the start of the month would reach the goal marginally sooner.

Why does it say the goal is met without any contributions?

Because at the return you entered, the balance you already have grows past the goal on its own within the horizon. The calculator says so rather than printing a negative monthly payment.

Can I pick a date in the past?

The calculator will show an empty state rather than a negative timeline. Pick a date in the future to see a monthly amount.

Does this calculator keep what I enter?

No. It runs in your browser and stores nothing. Sharing a link puts the figures in the URL, so only share one if you are happy for the recipient to see them.
